Welcome in the Kursana Residence

Your wishes are very important for us
An interview with nursing services manager Mina Beciri. (in the picture to the left of a resident of the Kursana Residence)

60 senior citizens live in the Kursana Residence in St. Gallen and Mina Beciri knows them all; along with their wishes, habits and concerns. The committed nursing services manager sees this knowledge as the basis for good care and high-quality nursing. "Respect for each resident's individuality is our top priority," she stresses.

Mina Beciri takes all the time it needs to get to know new residents. "I talk to the senior citizens and their families at length about their expectations," relates the 33-year-old. Often my job also involves reducing the sense of guilt and uncertainty that the children may feel when a parent moves into the residence. "We want to include the relatives in all decisions," say Mina Beciri. Partners need to be reassured especially when a person is brought to the residence requiring nursing care: "We stress that they are a considerable help to us and that the way they are looking after the person in question is admirable."

Quality through further training

When it comes to nursing care, Mina Beciri and her staff attach great importance to patience and love in dealing with the senior citizens. "In doing so, we respect and encourage independence," emphasises the nursing services manager.
In order to be able to constantly improve the quality of the care provided, Mina Beciri depends on staff interviews and individual further training. She is currently attending a course on team management at the technical college herself. "I am part of a dynamic team in which I value a pleasant team spirit highly." She is particularly proud of being able to help nursing students and thus do her part for the future of the nursing profession. "I try to set an example myself and tell them about my convictions," states Beciri. She expects her colleagues to enjoy meeting older people, to display professional and social competence as well as tact.

Close friendships and many friends.

Mina Beciri, who switched from the emergency ward in a hospital to caring for the elderly, loves her job: "I can help people here to shape the autumn of their lives individually and pleasantly." She learns a great deal from her daily interaction with the senior citizens and each day presents new challenges. "The residents give us a great deal of pleasure and close relationships come into being - after all, we live together as it were.

The company

Kursana was founded in 1985 as a subsidiary of the Dussmann Group and now operates a total of 109 seniors’ facilities. Over 90 of these are located in Germany; the others are located in Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Estonia. Altogether 6,500 employees care for approximately 13,000 seniors.

Nursing and care
Kursana’s nursing and care services provide a consistent, high quality concept which fulfills all the demands of professional care. Care is provided in a wide range of forms including not only traditional long-term nursing but also specialized care concepts. This makes it one of the few providers of seniors’ care in Germany who offer the whole range of services covering all care requirements.
Kursana also runs several care facilities for the disabled. Individual mobilization is an important aspect of all Kursana care concepts. In order to promote every resident’s capabilities and strengths, the company cooperates closely with seniors’ relatives. This allows staff to familiarize themselves with each individual life story which is the basis of successful therapy.
Seniors enjoy a number of opportunities and services: a comprehensive event program, in-house hairdressers and cosmeticians and individual counseling. Every resident can follow his or her personal interests.

Long-term care
Long-term inpatient care is our principal care concept, ranging from basic care to intensive nursing for seniors at all stages of life.
Short-term care
Short-term and respite care is offered to seniors who are usually cared for by their families. It relieves relatives of their responsibilities for short periods of time, such as holidays.

Forms of residence
Kursana offers seniors two forms of residence: Kursana domiciles with large single and double rooms and Kursana residences with comfortable apartments of different sizes. Both forms fulfill modern demands in terms of furnishings, functionality and comfort. Moving into a new house is always a challenge. To make the transition as comfortable as possible, Kursana offers its residents the possibility of bringing their own furniture, turning the new apartment into a new home.
Kursana residences
In the residences, seniors lead an independent but secure life. Every resident can seek assistance from our specialized staff at all times. That way, seniors can enjoy their free time and concentrate on what is most important – themselves. Kursana residences offer a comprehensive event program, including concerts, vernissages, lectures, films, and sports. The residences offer a variety of apartments which allow residents to incorporate their own ideas. From the very beginning, individual preferences play a central role. All apartments are generously proportioned and include a kitchen. Naturally, Kursana residences also offer catering for every taste.

Staff
Kursana’s experienced, competent personnel are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They all have professional qualifications and also regularly attend further training. Our staff is exceptional in its commitment and sensitivity for residents’ wishes and needs.

Nursing department
It is very important to us that in the event of our residents being inpatients in our nursing ward they are well looked after and feel at home. Here especially, a high quality of life and self-determination are absolutely essential. This is why a cosy and friendly nursing ward and particularly attentive, professional and loving nursing care form the basis of our full inpatient nursing services.

Working like being home

An interview with Rebeca Benitez, a nurse who has been working in the Kursana Residence since 2003. She learnt her profession in the Kursana and has been important for the nursing team since then.

At the Residence, we adjust to the wishes of the residents to quote Rebeca and not to a rigorous timetable. This only works with a team of staff who supports each other, added Rebecca. It is obvious she feels very comfortable in the family like surroundings of the Kursana Residence.

The work will vary day to day. Rebeca recounts how she boosted the self-esteem of one of her underweight patient. “The resident was very upset that her clothes were not fitting her too well. I found out what her favorite food was and together with the kitchen staff we devised a calorie rich menu for the resident. Within a month she gained 5 kilos.” Another example of the special hands on treatment of a resident, is demonstrated when Rebecca exercised with a partially paralyzed patient until she was able to raise one of her arms up to her throat.

Rebecca Benitez expresses her engagement at the Residence: “We work with our hearts, look after the elderly like we would with our grandparents, discuss problems with them and comfort them.”
